DAY OF:
Dia da Seresta
(Seresta). On September 10, there was the “Dia NACIONAL da Seresta”, the Brazilian Day of the Seresta. Today is the “Dia da Seresta”, as a kind of a homage to one of the most popular Brazilian presidents: Juscelino Kubitschek, who was born on September 12, 1902, in Diamantina (Minas Gerais). And Diamantina is considered as the city of Seresta. During the Seresta Festival, the Seresta ensemble is moving along the touristic locations in the historic center. Early 2007, the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral, had introduced, by law, another date for ‘Dia da Seresta’ (of the state of Rio de Janeiro): on May 23.

In the state of Paraná, governor Roberto Requião had launched a project (Trator Solidário) to finance the acquisition of new tractors for small-scale farmers. The costs for this ambitious project were estimated at 280 million reais (120 million euros) until 2010. About 320 thousand farmers will be benefited.

Dia do Operador de Rastreamento

The GPS (Global Positioning System) is becoming more familiar in Brazil; many trucks are monitored by GPS. In this way, it may be prevented that trucks and the valuable cargo will become in criminal hands.

Dia Nacional da Recreação
(Recreation). Leisure time is one of the fundamental human rights. This right is included in the Brazilian Federal Constitutional Law, third paragraph of article 217. The article tells that the parliament must encourage/ stimulate leisure time as a means for social development. Particularly children need leisure time to play, to learn daily life things by playing. Not only intellectual skills, but also social skills. In the Charter of the Rights of the Child (United Nations, 1959), there is described that any child has the right to play, at any location in the world.
O Poder Público incentivará o lazer, como forma de promoção social.

1902
Birth of president Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira (1902-1976).
Juscelino still may count on a huge popularity among Brazilians, more than thirty years after his fatal car accident. See also August 22.
1943
Creation of the Federal Territories of Amapá, Rio Branco, Ponta-Porã, Iguaçu and Guaporé.
Beyond doubt, Brazil is a huge nation. Brazil is the fifth largest country, after Russia, Canada, the United States, and China. Geographically, there have been considerable mutations in the administration of the capitanias, provinces, territories, and states. The most recent mutation was the separation of the state of Goiás into a smaller Goiás and the new state of Tocantins. In 1943, significant mutations took place, in which border regions with a few inhabitants became under direct federal rule. As a result, the federal government was more able to control its borders, in case of a war. Amapá is located at the mouth of the Amazon River, and became a state in 1988. Rio Branco has borders with Guyana and Venezuela, and became a state in 1988, with the name Roraima. Ponta-Porã, sharing the border with Paraguay, ceased to exist in 1946, and was integrated in the state of Mato Grosso. This state was split in the smaller state of Mato Grosso and the new state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Iguaçu, sharing borders with Paraguay and Argentina, also ceased to exist in 1946, and was integrated into the state of Paraná. Guaporé, sharing the border with Bolivia, became a state in 1981, with the name Rondônia.

SAUDADES
Álvares de Azevedo
‘ Tis vain to struggle — let me perish young BYRON
Tanto amor e ventura prometia…
E uma virgem tão doce, tão divina,
Nos sonhos junto a mim adormecia!
………………………………………………………..
Quando eu lia com ela… e no romance
Suspirava melhor ardente nota…
E Jocelyn sonhava com Laurence
Ou Werther se morria por Carlota…
Eu sentia a tremer e a transluzir-lhe
Nos olhos negros a alma inocentinha…
E uma furtiva lágrima rolando
Da face dela umedecer a minha!
E quantas vezes o luar tardio
Não viu nossos amores inocentes?
Não embalou-se da morena virgem
No suspirar, nos cânticos ardentes?
E quantas vezes não dormi sonhando
Eterno amor, eternas as venturas…
E que o céu ia abrir-se… e entre os anjos
Eu ia despertar em noites puras?
Foi esse o amor primeiro! requeimou-me
As artérias febris de juventude,
Acordou-me dos sonhos da existência
Na harmonia primeira do alaúde.
……………………………………………………………..
Meu Deus! e quantas eu amei… Contudo
Das noites voluptuosas da existência
Só restam-me saudades dessas horas
Que iluminou tua d’inocência.
Foram três noites só… três noites belas
De lua e de verão, no val saudoso…
Que eu pensava existir… sentindo o peito
Sobre teu coração morrer de gozo.
E por três noites padeci três anos,
Na vida cheia de saudade infinda…
Três anos de esperança e de martírio…
Três anos de sofrer — e espero ainda!
A ti se ergueram meus doridos versos,
Reflexos sem calor de um sol intenso,
Votei-os à imagem dos amores
Pra velá-la nos sonhos incenso.
Eu sonhei tanto amor, tantas venturas,
Tantas noites de febre e d’esperança…
Mas hoje o coração parado e frio,
Do meu peito no túmulo descansa.
Pálida sombra dos amores santos!
Passa quando eu morrer no meu jazigo,
Ajoelha ao luar e entoa um canto…
Que lá na morte eu sonharei contigo.
