BRAZILIAN HISTORY:
1999
Death of Bertha Celeste Homem de Mello (1902-1999), writer of the Portuguese version of “Happy Birthday to You”.
At present, almost everyone knows the melody of the most popular birthday song: “Parabéns pra você” in Portuguese. However, this Portuguese version is not that old…
In 1875, to teachers, the sisters Mildred and Patricia Hill, introduced a song for their pupils, in the American city of Louisville. It was “Good Morning to you All”, sung in four different pitches. In 1924, an American publisher issued a partiture book with “Celebration Songs”. In this book was included an adapted version of the sisters Hill’s song: Happy Birthday to you. Nine years later, this song was performed in a musical at Broadway. The melody migrated to Brazil, and as a winner of a contest, Bertha created a Portuguese version, in 1942:

1746
Birth of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes (1746-1792).
Tiradentes is one of the most influential people in Brazilian history. He was born near São João del Rei in the state of Minas Gerais. He became an orphan at early age. Joaquim worked as a cowboy, mine investigator, and was surgeon. Later, he became commander of Regimento de Dragões, which patrolled in the vast forests of Minas, in the search for bandits and murderers. At that time, motherland Portugal claimed Brazilian richness. When these rich sources were about to decrease, new taxes were introduced. A group of free thinkers, among them Tiradentes, supported the ideology of the American independence and the French revolution. The group decided to found a republic, with São João del Rei as the new capital. The proposed flag is the current flag of Minas Gerais. The group was betrayed, the leaders had to flee. They all were captured and condemned to death. All of them were pardoned, except Tiradentes. Those who were pardoned, were expelled to the interior of the African colonies. Tiradentes was executed publicly: he was hung and mutilated, on 21 April 1792, in Rio de Janeiro. Since the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic in 1889, 21 April is a national holiday.

1501
Discovery of Cabo São Roque by the expedition of Gaspar de Lemos and Américo Vespúcio.
The cape, named after the saint of that day, is at about 50 km of the city of Natal. This location is the nearest to the most western location in Africa. The Portuguese expedition did not really receive a warm welcome by the Indians living there: One of the cabin boys was captured by Indian women, then decapitated, cut into pieces and devoured, in front of the crew. When the expedition was about to leave, the crew members were attacked with numerous arrows. Vespucci did not take revenge, but continued his journey southward, and managed to map the Brazilian eastern coastline in only a few months time.
1942
Brazilian vessels Aníbal Mendonça and Aníbal Benévolo torpedoed by a German U-boat (U-507).
In total, 281 crew members were killed. One day later, the vessels Araxá and Itagiba were attacked and destroyed. On 13 January 1943, the U-boat was attacked and destroyed.

Foundation of Teresina, capital of the state of Piauí.
Teresina is the only capital in northeastern Brazil that is not a coastal city. In addition, it is the youngest capital in that region. The city was planned by Antônio Conselheiro Saraiva, governor of Piauí at that time. The original street plan strongly resembled to a chessboard, with streets perpendicular on each other. The recent expansions created large districts, adjacent to the center, and the center is now difficult to reach. Teresina is with Timon, in the neighboring state of Maranhão, a twin city. Teresina is famous for its hot, tropical climate, with average temperatures varying between 26 and 40 degrees. The city is also know for its frequent thunderstorms, according to the website of the city, Teresina is ranked third in the world, talking about lighting frequency. Teresina is also a very green city, thanks to the numerous mango trees, flanking the straight avenidas. Teresina, now counting more than 700 thousand inhabitants, is located at the margins of the Paraníba and the Poty River, and initially was named Vila Nova de Poty. Later it was renamed into Teresina, as a homage to the empress, wife of Dom Pedro II.
