DAY OF:
Dia Mundial Vegano
(World Vegan Day). On 1 November 1944, in the UK, it was Donald Watson who introduced the word ‘vegan’, – which is derived from the first and last letters of ‘vegetarian’ -, and founded the first Vegan Society. . His motivation for this new word was to indicate being vegetarian from beginning to end. The Vegan Society’s formal definition is: “Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” Veganism is protected as a human right under Article 9 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. Fifty years later, the World Vegan Day was introduced by Louise Wallis, then president of the Vegan Society. Notable vegans are Bryan Adams, Al Gore, Pamela Anderson, Carl Lewis, Avril Lavigne, Barry White.

BRAZILIAN HISTORY:
1501
Discovery of Bahia de Todos os Santos (All Saints’ Bay) by André Gonçalves and Américo Vespúcio.
Baía de Todos os Santos, located in the state of Bahia, is the largest bay in Brazil. The bay gained its name, when a Portuguese expedition arrived on 1 November 1501, All Saint’s Day. This expedition was commanded by Gaspar de Lemos, and accompanied by cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. The discoverers named every newly discovered location after the saint of the day of discovery. Because of the strategic location and the arable land surrounding it, the bay quickly gained interest by the Europeans. The Portuguese founded Salvador, the first capital of the Portuguese colony in South America.

Death of writer Lima Barreto
Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto was born in Rio de Janeiro on 13 May 1881. Afonso, a mestizo, was initially taught by his mother. He then followed the Ginásio Nacional and a Polytechnical School, which he had to abandon when his father became mentally ill. In 1905, Afonso published his first version of the novel ‘Clara dos Anjos’. He also started to write a series of reports for the newspaper ‘Correio de Manhã’. Afonso became much interested in works of European realist writers and Russian romantic authors. In 1911, he wrote – in just three months – his best known novel: Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma’, in which he described and criticized the early years of the First Brazilian Republic. Afonso became addicted to alcohol, but he managed to continue his writings. Because of the diagnosis of toxic epilepsy, he retired in 1918. Afonso continued with writing chronicles and novels, including ‘Clara dos Anjos (1921, published in 1948). Afonso died on 1 November 1922, and his father died two days later. In 1956, this complete works were published in 17 volumes.

Approval of Lei de Anistia by president João Figueiredo
Since the military coup in 1964, more than 800 parliamentarians had been blocked from political activities, and more than fifteen thousand Brazilians had been banned from Brazil. With this amnesty, they gradually returned to Brazil.
